JOE CLARK (1938 -2020)
The staff of ASPIRA Inc., of New Jersey (ASPIRA) sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Joe Clark. He was 82 years old.
ASPIRA has had a long history with Eastside High School. Our Academic Advisor, Leticia Minaya, has dedicated our resources to ensure that young people have an opportunity to be successful - not only through their academics, but also through self exploration of the limitless opportunities that are beyond the parameters of their neighborhood. Like Mr. Clark, we understand that investing in their futures, ensures our future.
Mr. Clark was seen as an educator who was not afraid to get tough on anything that impeded the progress of students from learning in a safe, caring environment. His method drew great praise and concern alike, but he was always an advocate for underserved and disenfranchised youth. After his tenure as principal of Eastside High, Mr. Clark later served as director of the Essex County Detention House in Newark, New Jersey, a juvenile detention facility.
He appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1988 and the movie, "Lean on Me," starring Morgan Freeman, was released in 1989. Mr. Clark also published a book, "Laying Down the Law" about his educational strategy at the Paterson High School.
