The purpose of this program is to increase the involvement of Latino and other minority parents in the education of their children at home; in-school and after school activities; and in support of school and education reform. The APEX Program, which has been in existence since 1997, consists of a series of 10 workshops which address such topics as helping children improve their study habits, communication skills at home, improving self-esteem, understanding school structure, and leadership skills. In addition, the program trains parents, who have completed the program to become APEX facilitators themselves and recruit other parents. This approach significantly increases the number of parents trained.
